2019 LUNGS FOR KENYA CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Golf for Restoration of Mt Kenya forest

Nature Kenya is again holding its Charity Golf tournament at The Karen Country Club on the 29th March.

The theme is again “Lungs for Kenya” and the objective is to raise money to support the restoration of the Mt Kenya Forest.

Mt Kenya provides water to over two million people, over 70% of Kenya’s hydro electricity and the potential to supply 1 million hectares of land targeted for irrigation. Unfortunately, Mt Kenya is becoming increasingly degraded, erosion is high, dams are silting, the quantity and quality of water is reducing and water treatment costs are increasing. Restoring Mt Kenya is not a choice but an obligation. Nature Kenya will partner with 23 Community Forest Associations to plant two million trees in Mt. Kenya forest at a cost of Ksh 140million in 10 years.

Over the last three years of the Lungs for Kenya campaign, 300,000 trees have been planted through concerted efforts of the private sector, local communities and government. From the money raised at last year’s golf tournament we were able to plant 29,000 seedlings with a 90% survival rate.

2018 “Lungs for Kenya” Charity Golf Tournament

2018 Lungs for Kenya Charity Golf Tournament

Friday 23rd March 2018 at the Karen Country Club.

"Lungs for Kenya" Charity Golf Tournament

The tournament aims to raise funds to restore water services provided by Mt Kenya forest. You can be the Main event Sponsor (Gold), Silver sponsor, Bronze Sponsor, Hole sponsor, Media sponsor, and team entries or make any cash donation, support raffle and auction items, exhibit on the golf day or support your staff to plant trees in Mt Kenya.

Nature conservation is real. This is best demonstrated in Mt Kenya. Mt Kenya is a key pillar for vision 2030. Provides fresh drinking water to over 2 million people. Over 70% of Kenya’s electricity is from hydropower. 0ver 95% of Nairobi’s water is from Sasumua and Ndakaini dams. Over 1.0 million ha of Tana River water shed is under food production.

So Mt Kenya is food, electricity, jobs and drinking water for millions of Kenyans.

Unfortunately, Mt Kenya has been undergoing serious deforestation. Surrounding landscapes are increasingly degraded. Erosion is high and there is increased siltation of dams. Water quantity and quality is reducing. Water treatment costs are increasing. Power rationing is rampant during dry season. There is acute water shortage for industry and domestic use. Businesses are losing money. Many jobs are lost. Destroying Mt Kenya increases poverty. Taking action to restore Mt Kenya is not a choice but an obligation.

It is on this backdrop that we have chosen Mt. Kenya to be the beneficiary for the 2018 golf tournament.

In 2017, Nature Kenya developed a business case for the restoration of Mt Kenya forest. Community Forest Associations are trained and are planting over 100,000 trees using proceeds from last tournament and Kenya Breweries sponsorship. The 2018 Golf event will help Nature Kenya to do more.

The event will be a full 18 holes of golf, light lunch, delicious dinner, raffles and auction! We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with VIVO Energy Kenya as our Charity sponsor.
