Mukurweini
Environmental Volunteers was established in 1995 and has a membership
of 35. The group is based in Mukurwe-ini town in Nyeri District.
The Mukurweini Important Bird Area consists of steep-sided stream
and river valleys with Lantana thickets, on the lower south-east
slopes of the Aberdare Mountains. Hinde’s Babbler, a globally-threatened
Kenya endemic with a very restricted range occurs in this IBA at
relatively high densities. Other bird species are typical of forest
edges and scrub habitats in the central Kenya highlands. |
Activities
and impacts
• Detailed site monitoring
• Bee keeping: 18 hives acquired
• Tree nursery established and 8 hectares of riverine habitat
re-planted
• Each year, MEVO organizes the ?Hinde’s Babbler Volleyball
tournament to create conservation awareness and enthusiasm
