At
eight Important Bird Areas, Nature Kenya works with local community
groups, called Site Support Groups (SSGs). Nature
Kenya builds the capacity of SSGs to take action for the conservation
of their sites, while improving local livelihoods through sustainable
use of the natural resources. SSGs have been highly successful as
a tool for delivering conservation action at the local level, fighting
poverty through various income generating activities, educating
the public and school children, and advocating for the interests
of local communities in government policy and decision-making. Site
Support Groups also work with other partners including government
agencies, the private sector, donors and non-governmental organisations.
Kenya’s SSGs include:
- The
Friends of Kinangop Plateau (FoKP)
- Mukurwe-ini
Environmental Volunteers (MEVO)
- South
Nandi Biodiversity Conservation Group (SONABIC)
- Arabuko-Sokoke
Forest Guides Association (ASFGA)
- Mida
Creek Conservation and Awareness Group (MCCAG)
- Kereita
Environmental Volunteers (KENVO)
- Kakamega
Environmental Education Programme (KEEP)
- Mount
Kenya Biodiversity Conservation Group (MKBCG)
